In the project "Racism and Human Rights – Strengthening the Criminal Justice System" (2017 - 2018) various training modules for criminal court judges and public prosecutors in the field of racism are to be developed, tested and integrated into the education and training structures of the federal states, taking into account the human rights framework.
The trainings are intended to support judges and prosecutors to react appropriately to racist and hate-motivated acts, and to deal with the experiences of persons affected by racism sensitively in criminal proceedings (and thus to ensure their access to justice effectively and without discrimination). In-depth training courses, short modules for the integration into existing training courses, in particular in the introductory sessions for probationary judges, as well as exchange and discussion events within existing series of events and conferences will be developed.
The project, launched in January 2017, is funded by the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection (Bundesministerium der Justiz und für Verbraucherschutz - BMJV) and has been designed for two years.
The German Institute for Human Rights conducts the project in co-operation with the BMJV as well as with the federal states of Bavaria, Lower Saxony, Berlin / Brandenburg and supraregional with the German Judicial Academy. The project work is supported by an advisory council, consisting of judicial, scientific and civil society stakeholders. Advisory council members are:
