Promising Practices: Water and sanitation - Ensuring access for the urban poor in Kenya

Kenya suffers from chronic water shortages due to the relationship between limited available resources, population growth and environmental degradation. Women and children are particularly affected. Management of water resources is improving due to a comprehensive water sector reform process which started in 2002 – albeit slowly. The German-Kenyan Programme "Reform of the Water Sector" aims to increase the sustainable access of the urban poor to water and sanitation. The document describes process, impact and challenges of the German-Kenyan Programme "Reform of the Water Sector" and concludes with lessons learned.

Combating Discrimination: How a National Human Rights Institution can strengthen Civil Society Organisations - An Example of Good Practice

In this publication, the German Institute for Human Rights presents the project "Non-Discrimination: Competencies of Associations" as an example for the development of organisations' capacities in the field of equality and human rights. The project (2009 – 2011) aimed at strengthening the implementation and enforcement of non-discrimination rights through organisations, and thereby at promoting a general culture of non-discrimination and human rights in Germany. After an overview of the role of civil society organisations in the mobilisation of non-discrimination and equality rights, the aims, approaches, means and methods of the project will be set out. The publication ends with the results of the project and recommendations for the realisation of effective protection against discrimination.

Conference on Enforced Disappearances Berlin, 25 April 2012

On 25 April 2012, the German Institute for Human Rights, the Nuremberg Human Rights Centre and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg co-hosted an international conference on enforced disappearances in Berlin. This documentation provides a retrospective of the conference.
The hosts' intention behind the conference was to bring together a select group of international experts from the fields of human rights and public international law to discuss a number of core issues and to raise public awareness with regard to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (CPED). The CPED is the youngest of the so-called core international human rights treaties elaborated within the United Nations.
