Comments on the AIIB’s Draft Environmental and Social Framework dated 3rd August 2015

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is scheduled to start operations January 1st 2016. Like "classic" development banks, the AIIB will dispose over Environmental and Social Standards, which are supposed to ensure that its financing doesn't cause or further environmental or social harm. AIIB's interim secretariat has opened a draft of the future environmental and social framework for consultation. The German Institute for Human Rights has contributed to this process with a submission.

Promising Practice: Health - Ensuring inclusion and access to quality health care in Kenya

A majority of Kenyans faces difficulties in claiming their right to health including adequate healthcare. Since 2006, the German-Kenyan Health Sector Programme has adopted a human rights-based approach. Its objective is to improve equitable access – especially for the poor and marginalised groups comprising those affected by HIV/AIDS – to affordable and good quality healthcare, particularly in the area of reproductive health. The document describes impact and challenges of the German-Kenyan Health Sector Programme and concludes with lessons learned.

Promising Practices: Water and sanitation - Ensuring access for the urban poor in Kenya

Kenya suffers from chronic water shortages due to the relationship between limited available resources, population growth and environmental degradation. Women and children are particularly affected. Management of water resources is improving due to a comprehensive water sector reform process which started in 2002 – albeit slowly. The German-Kenyan Programme "Reform of the Water Sector" aims to increase the sustainable access of the urban poor to water and sanitation. The document describes process, impact and challenges of the German-Kenyan Programme "Reform of the Water Sector" and concludes with lessons learned.

Jahresbericht/Annual Report 2008

One major area in which human rights have certainly come under pressure in recent years is security policy. This is a global phenomenon which includes Europe and Germany. The German Institute for Human Rights therefore paid special attention in 2008 to those security policy developments in Germany and Europe which threaten to diminish the value placed on rights to freedom. People often lose sight of the fact that there are human rights concerns behind apparently "technical" concepts such as data protection. The anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights therefore marked a welcome occasion for reflecting in concrete terms on the conditions people need to live their lives in dignity and liberty, including in the light of current security policy developments.
