Education
Human Rights Education offered by the German Institute for Human Rights
Human rights education includes three core learning areas: (1) learning about human rights, designed to impart knowledge on universal rights and freedoms; (2) learning through human rights, aiming at the reflection of views and attitudes on the basis of human rights norms and principles; and (3) learning for human rights for the promotion of skills and competences in the human rights field. In order to develop to the fullest the emancipatory effect of human rights, a comprehensive promotion of competences is necessary to enable people to exercise their rights (empowerment) and to show solidarity for the rights of others.
The goals and tasks of human rights education are not only to provide the general public with basic human rights education, but also to offer tailor-made qualification for particular target groups through training and further education. For this purpose the institute offers seminars and lecture series on current human rights issues as well as complex programmes and training seminars dealing with general questions as well as specific issues of human rights protection (e. g. protection from discrimination). Human rights education thus helps to professionalize human rights work, which is essential for applying and strengthening human rights protection mechanisms.
