The Institute's Structure
The Institute is a non-profit association. It is politically independent and acts on its own initiative (see statute of the association).
The Institute was established on 8 March 2001 on the basis of a resolution passed by the German Parliament in December 2000 (German, PDF, 205 KB, not barrier free). The Institute is based on the Paris Principles which regulate National Human Rights Institutions. It has been accredited with A-status by the International Coordinating Committee.
It receives funding from the German federal government budget of the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.
The terms of reference of the Institute's work are set by its Board of Trustees, which is composed of representatives from civil society, academia, and the media and politics .
The Institute's Board of Directors has two members, Prof. Dr. Beate Rudolf (director) and Michael Windfuhr (deputy director).
